Hair in the 1920's.
For boys and girls hairstyles were getting shorter and shorter. The 1920's were the most contraversial time period for hair and fashion in America for boys and girls. Both men and woman used waves in their hair to give it a wavy look. Hats were also popular for both genders. Hairstyles during this time period were quite simple to the previous decade . Short hair was more frequently curled on the sides and ends to make it a softer look (Derrick 1). The very short hair like chin length was frequently given stiff wave curls before being pulled back into a bun at the nape of the neck.
Long hair was often pinned into a bun at the neck to keep it out of the way. 1920's hairstyles have influenced modern fashion in many ways ( Derrick 1).
Bob Hair style
The bob hairstyle is not out of style, many celebrities are continually cutting off their long locks for the chin bob or the longer bobs ( Charles 1). The bob originated during the world war 1 as a women joined the workforce and no longer had time for pin curls and irons. To crop the hair resulted in freedom , rebellion and independence for the right to vote(Charles 1). The long bob looked better on woman with a round face. Bobs normally work best for thin to medium hair.
Natalie Kingston Bob Hairstyle
The Natalie Kingston Bob hairstyle was a general hair cut (Boland 1). Bobbing the hair was more of cutting it short rather than the hairstyle itself. Most woman bobbed their hair regardless of how you fashioned it. Girls bobbed their hair for many reasons , one for which the cloche hats could fit over their heads(Womens Fashion 1). Generally, the this hair style was cut square around the base of the head and the bob fell to the bottom of the ears (Womens Fashion 1). Sometimes bangs were worn with this hair style but majority of the time , the bangs were worn to the side.
The Dutch Boy
Louise Brooks "Dutch Boy" hairstyle was not the most popular hairstyle but most iconic style during the 1920's (Boland 1). The square look with the bangs and the sides that frame Brooks beautiful face show the influence of the Art Deco movement with their sharp angles and square lines. Louise Brooks will always be remember as " the girl in the black helmet" because of the look of her hairstyle(Boland 1).
The Shingled
The shingled hairstyle had several variation throughout the 1920's. Antoine, the most famous French hairdresser of the the time period perfected the shingle cut in 1925 (Boland 1). Shingled hair was known for its short length at the back of the woman's neck. Shingled hair lay flat on the woman's head , and covered their ears. Sometimes " spit curls" little ringlets were put into the hair at a young woman's forehead or cheeks( Boland 1).
Eton Crop
The Josephine Baker Eton crop was named after a British boys prep school (Boland 1). The Eton Crop exposed a womans ears and was cut short all over the head. This look remained popular with women who like to separate themselves from the crowd.
